    SuperFly flycutter and mild steel

I own one of the Tormach SuperFly fly cutters. It is a great tool on aluminum. I am however quite gun-shy using it on mild steel. I have to surface some 1 3/4 (and wider) wide mild steel. I watched the Tormach youtube video on the SuperFly and they were running 1,000 rpm and fairly deep if I recall 0.25. Now I am not sure if that is inches, but if it is that is 6mm deep! If it is metric then I can understand. My mill vibrates badly running 0.05mm with the SuperFly on mild steel at ~500 rpm. Maybe I am running too slow?

I think they were running .025 DOC i.e. 0.6 mm. Much more reasonable no? They were running 1000 rpm and 10 ipm. What feed are you running?

Are you using the aluminum insert in steel? Get the correct insert.

Makes a lot more sense Bob. I am manual feeding (RF45 non-CNC yet). I am running the Tormach cemented carbide inserts.

Tormach sells two types of inserts for their fly cutter - polished for aluminum and general purpose for (presumably) ferrous materials. Which one are you using?

I have both inserts - polished for AL and Cemented carbide for steel.
