Going from direct drive to gear-drive? CNC software scaling of steps?

Hi everyone. 'nother noob here. Starting to research DIY-CNC but I am wondering something.

Designing CNC right now, but I might want to make some changes to the CNC in the future once it's built.

I plan on going with lead screw movement for the x-axis. And my question is how do I compensate for changes in these two scenarios:

Scenario A: stepper motor driving the x-axis lead screw directly

Scenario B: stepper motor driving the x-axis lead screw indirectly using gears. Like the photo below.

How do I do make the same sculpture, same size, same scale, going from Scenario A to Scenario B? What is that software capability called? I imagine most CNC software has settings for this? Is there a technical word for that so I can do more research? Scaling? I obviously have no experience with CNC software yet, but I am hoping this is no big deal.

You just tell the Control software how many steps it needs to send to move 1 unit. A unit is typically either an inch, or a millimeter.

Scaling is usually the term used, as Gerry mentioned it is usually a simple procedure.

With two gears you will have to reverse the axis direction
