    Getting a laser engraver

So I have some production parts that we need to get marked somehow. Due to their irregular shapes, screen printing isn't really an option. Pad printing is a possibility as well as engraving. But I kind of like the idea of laser engraving the parts as I think we could do more with it and it has the potential to look a lot cooler (a bonus when selling to our target market). The parts are powder coated 6061 aluminum. We don't sell a ton of these, but I am an equipment junkie and like to do stuff in house. Plus that way at the end of the day we spend less on processes and have more flexibility. Anyway, realistically, to get a laser that would do what I want it to do, what am I looking at from a cost stand point and where should I look for brands or seller? I am just starting to explore this route to see if its a viable option.

Buy the laser if you can make money with it. Don't buy it because you feel you're being over charged by the local engraver. More than likely there is a reason they are charging that much. I run into this every so often and if you really sit down, it rarely pays to go out and buy a $6000+ tool to do $500 worth of work.

As for cost, you can't get into the business with much less than $6000 unless you get a really good deal or buy a toy.

We were going to have to pay about 900.00 per month to get our laser work done.

It may be done in 4 days or 10 , I don't like giving my customers such vauge delivery times.

    No brainer in our case.

with powdercoat you might get some unusual finishes when it melts, I would get a piece tested if you haven't already.

    Cheers
