    Linuxcnc and 64 bit computers

    I have a HP Paviliondv7 with a AMD processor, 64 bit.
After installing ubuntu 10.04.4LTS I tried activating the cnc part and
Terminal starts installing but Terminal disapears after a few seconds.
I tried several times but the result is always the same.
So I installed ubuntu 8.04 the 64 bit version and I got the cnc part
but latency test and linux cnc not working, configuration , linuxcnc
instructions and HAL instructions is working. I have no machine working at
this time so I can not test any further.
Running 'latency-test' in Terminal gets me a message telling me to boot
with another version of 8.04 which I have on my boot screen but running
that gets a BusyBox message which I can't make any sense of.
Any ideas anyone on how to fix this or ideas on instalation of ubuntu
    on a 64 bit computer.

Just a quick note: Laptops are _very_ unlikely to be good candidates for LinuxCNC as they almost always have power management firmware the ruins real time performance and cannot be disabled

Yes I know this and a lot of these can be turned off but at least one

should be able to install the ubuntu operating system without problems.

Look at any ubuntu forum and see how many can not even get their

    WiFi working with ubuntu.

It's like I read somewhere: Ubuntu is made by cooks (computernerds)

for their own use and not their dining guests. It needs to be taken out

of their hands and handled by people who have some common sense

otherwise a good concept like ubuntu will never be taken seriously.

I don't like windows but at least their system is somewhat user friendly.

Meanwhile ubuntu leaves so many of us totally frustrated.

Since you will not be able to run an actual machine controller from a laptop
the Buildbot 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) simulator version is more likely to work on a newer machine.

If you are serious and want to use LinuxCNC for controlling a machine, chose a CPU that has know good real time performance and compatibility.

If you do not need to run a machine then running the simulator is a lot easier.
