    Please recommend a vertical mill machine

    Hello, I am looking to buy a vertical mill machine.
    - looking for a machine for small jobs
    - reliability is important
    - tight tolerances
    - RPM >= 10K
    - preferably CT40 taper to be used for medium-sized parts
    - not too old (2000 - 2007 or so)

    I wonder if anyone has any suggestions to help me focus my further research.

    Thank you very much!

    You might consider a used Hermle milling machine. Deckel is another brand that might be considered.

    For RPM higher 10k I recommend rather HSK63 or similiar System who cannot slip in the taper.

    I know, there are machines with BT they run more than 10.000. But if you work a long time with near max speed, than your spindletaper gets bigger and your tool slips into it. If you
    don't remove your tool after that, you get problems to remove it, after the spindle has cooled down. With HSK or other Systems (sorry I don't know whats the word in englisch, in German its called Plananlage, that is, you have a flange on the spindle and the tool, they connect and the Tool can't slip into the spindletaper) with this feature, you can't have those problems.

    If you have a decent machine, 40 taper is no problem up to 15k rpm. Spindles should never get warm, and IMO its not worth the extra expense to go to hsk tooling until you reach that or higher. If you are concerned at all, you could go to a big 40 face contact, which can still use std 40 taper tooling, or buy the double contact tooling. We have 40 taper machines that run 20k rpm without issue, however balancing now becomes super critical. Our high speed machines(40k to 60k) machines all use hsk 16 or 32.
