    Can't start up LinuxCNC!

    Hi,

I downloaded the disc last night and burned it (10.04), but I can't get it or the latency utility to start. I tried two different computers, one I tried the LiveCD and the other I did a full install. Both result in the same thing. They boot Ubuntu just fine.

If I try to launch the Latency test, nothing happens, no windows open, etc.

If I launch the main program it asks for a configuration. I've tried a normal one and ones under the sim with the same results. I then see the 2.5.0 banner and then an error: LinuxCNC terminated with an error.

Any ideas? I didn't expect the same result on both systems...

    Thanks,

    Alan

    You can run...

    dmesg

which will show a log of the system messages. This kind of failure in EMC will usually appear there.

If that doesn't help, try posting to the LinuxCNC mailing list. There's a lot more active people there. (See the community link on the LinuxCNC web site).

Disable Hyperthreading or C1E in bios cpu configuration. Then try.
If no luck then disable your nvidia or ATI proprietary display drivers and use opensource driver instead.

The display drivers were my problem. Used open source drivers and no more problems.

Another thing you can try to get the log messages is to open a terminal and launch LinuxCNC from a command line. LinuxCNC will also print all the error messages to stdout - ie, the terminal window. Saves you from fishing around in what could be a large dmesg file.

Try running it from the command line, and when it croaks, post the error messaging in the terminal window here. Maybe we can slog through it and locate what is actually causing the problem.
