I have both types, a series II has box way construction on the "Y" axis which is ideal for a CNC. So this would be your :idea: best choice for your retrofit.

Series II all the way. It's twice as heavy, more rigid, has ballscrews on the NC version, and has a 4hp head.
Proud owner of a Series II Bridgeport.
I don't have a Series II, but that's the way I would go knowing what I know now.
