What about the kit from Openbuilds.com? All-in-one USB CNC controllers. And they talk to their NEMA stepper motors. Couldn't be simpler.

Not sure anyone has yet mentioned DMM-Tech in Canada.....
They have multi-axis kits, not completely plug and play though, but close enough.

Lin Engineering very good quality stepper motors at pretty ok prices. They have seem to have some single axis drivers and controllers.
