I'd been looking at the various steel builds and eyeing channel sizes trying to picture a machine. So I happen to be doing just that at the steel yard when I spy a drop of 3". Huh, I says. Couple of those. Oh look a 5-6" tube,.. Hmmm what else might I need at $0.50/lb ,...





Now what,... ?

Man, have you found the right steel yard! My local yard doesn't sell pickup trucks, let alone at $0.50/lb !

I got all mine at $.30/lbs! All of this cost me $180...

Yeah, I miss those prices. Got raped down at Davis on stainless and perf, but that'll be in the epoxy concrete forum (sorting sand & gravel).

The places uptown are a bit more and more organized, but one has the drop area covered so not much rust to deal with. My favorite place cleared out when steel prices shot up. I walked in there and was like "where's the drop pile"? They'd just drop it in a pile and you'd have to try to fish stuff out. Full 20' pieces with bends or kinks. I beams, tubing, a little bit of everything. Walking the pile was,.. interesting. He had great prices, but it sucked trying to get just what you need. Specially when a 16" I beam was laying on what you wanted. "Crane to aisle 4,..".

Haven't ruled out linears, but bought the small channel to mount on the 3" for Vbearings to ride on. Still kicking that around,...
