There is a growing necessity for an automatic layout machine in the structural steel fabrication world. Currently, most fabricators rely on manual layout processes, which prove to be both costly and time consuming. T-squares, measuring tape, and other dated means of measurement have created a ‘bottleneck’ in the age of CNC productivity. To produce more tonnage and increase efficiency, fabricators need a better solution.

Peddinghaus Corporation, an industry leader providing innovative machine tool technology for structural steel and plate fabrication, recently released the PeddiWriter Automatic Layout Marking Machine. The PeddiWriter is the first standalone layout machine to produce all layout on a structural steel section in a single pass.

“I can pull 3-4 men off my floor on a shift,” Les McCally of Agate Steel (Scottsdale, AZ-USA) said upon witnessing the machine. “This machine can reduce 35% of my labor and will eliminate potential errors from manual layout.”

Incorporating two independent Hypertherm ArcWriting torches within a four axis layout marking system, the PeddiWriter allows marking of all primary surfaces of a profile. As both torches maintain independent X, Y, and Z motions, unique characters and layout marks can be applied to two surfaces of a profile simultaneously.

“The PeddiWriter uses plasma to simultaneously mark two sides of the beam,” John Liaromatis of Kostas Liaromatis (Patras Greece) said. “This machine makes life easier and faster. In the future, steel fabricators will always need the PeddiWriter.”

The PeddiWriter features state-of-the-art Roller Probe surface detection, which allocates a proper standoff distance between the material and the plasma torch during a marking program. The already expedited marking of plasma is faster than other techniques, such as carbide scribing.

Equipped with the unparalleled Peddinghaus Roller Measurement technology, the PeddiWriter guides material through the machine with a powerful drive roller mechanism. A precision encoder tracks the travel of material. This proven method of measurement allows benefits such as streamlined handling, and modular shop layout options.

The PeddiWriter is a machine that there will always be a need for in the structural steel fabrication market. It minimizes overhead costs, and diminishes human error associated with manual weld data layout marking.
