Off the tool point? or off the side of the insert?

You might get a quicker and better response to your question if you ask it on one of the machining sub-forums. This forum is for "Product Announcements & Manufacturer News".

I always do Z axis touch on the leading edge. If you need the point for your programming style then you can subtract 1/2 width

The edge of the tool closest to the workpiece. THAT'S what's gonna run into stuff first!
The control is going to assume you're using the edge of the tool, not the center, and if you use the center, the center is going to satisfy the -Z value. If you don't have enough relief or there's a shoulder....guess what.
It helps if you've got an optical comparator to measure both the distance from the edge of the insert to the center of the tip, but also the actual radius of the insert's tip to help dial in the X offset.
I use Z axis
