    5 axis setup

I'm thinking of setting up a small mill like sherline or tiag with a trunnion table for 5 axis. (this is my understanding and was looking for clarifiction) Mach 3 to a smoothstepper handles 5 axis through dual parallel ports. Can I then hook one to a g540 and the othe port to a BOB to a g250 to get a 5 axis setup?

ps. can't believe no one here has a comment. Or on the geckdrive site forum. I didn't think it was that tough of a question for you gurus out here. Post on the DIY forum and nada. I guess the Gecko people don't even look at their own forum questions. Is that my question is so far off no one wants to wade in?

Even though I don't know the answer

I'll reply anyway, just so you don't feel neglected...

It seems that the main advantage of the G540 is that it handles 4 axes without requiring a breakout board. If you need to get one anyway, you might as well use individual geckodrives. The advantage would be that you could go with a bigger power supply (80v vs 50v) and potentially get better performance from your motors.

You might ask Komar how he set up his system, which seems a lot like the one you're looking to build. Here's a link to his post:

Let us know what you end up doing, okay?
