    Mwood's G0704 Build

I bought my G0704 a few months back and have been steadily working with the machine. I have purchased Hoss's phase 1 and 2 plans and FYI they are loaded with info that I didnt expect at the price he has them offered.

I have made most of the parts for the x and y conversion just working on the stand offs and the Y motor plate now. I have also started to order the electronics for the conversion a little at a time, making sure each componet is exactly what I wish to use.

I will try to get some pictures up by this weekend(although I dont have anything too interesting at this point) just a manual G0704.

What I will ask for is a few ideas on the layout of an electronics enclosure. I have an older computer case stripped down(the laydown desktop style case) I planned to use this case but am having a hard time envisioning how everything will fit in there. All I have at this point is the power supply(48V 7.3a) and i just ordered the DB9 connectors and plastic boots to make up the motor cables. I plan on using the power cord from a PC to provide AC power to the PS, and this is as far as I have gotten. much more to come this is just the start

I'm planning to mod a tower case too. My plan was to basically cut my own rear panel and replace the back of the case with it. I will have jacks for E-STOP and the motors as well as limit switches and other aux equipment. I also plan to make mounting plates or rails for the internal hardware that will be screwed on through the side of the case on on the motherboard side. That way I can arrange everything as I choose and that side will be bolted to the side of the mill stand so nobody is going to see the exposed screws on the motherboard mounting side of the computer case. Will paint it blue to match the rest of my mill.

I would try to keep it interchangable/expandable using plates/panels. I know good and well I am going to think of a better way to do right right as I finish the current way of doing it.

I did this a couple years ago, it started as a couple of towers.

So i just placed an order from Keling for 2 of the KL 6050 drivers, 2 570oz stepper motors, a c-10 BOB, 2 limit switches and an estop button...just going to do the x and y conversion first, then the Z later.

got an email right back along with a refund for the 2 KL 6050 drivers...they are out of stock. Hopefully they will backorder them for me, I have an email in to them asking for them to do so. looks like the drivers are 30 days out...

Hoss you made this mill and electronics package too popular the poor retailers really cant keep up.

Maybe I should reconsider some of the emails I get from China wanting me to be a stepper/driver reseller.
    Maybe not.

    Hoss,

I do have to say...your word seems to be gold...Maybe its some awfully big coincidence but seems you are the best advertisement a supplier could have for benchtop CNC gear...

got an email back from keling today about the 6050's, they dont want to put me on a back order list...just said to email back in some days

Funny I can't even get a link exchange with most of them.
Probably because I say bad things about them from time to time too.
Oh well, truth hurts sometimes in the no spin zone.
The KL- 5056 would work just as well as the 6050.

True it would work and seems to be a bit better drive but at double the price...I had to bribe the wife just to get the money to buy what I did . also dont think they have it in stock either... here is what they told me:

KL 6050 is just out of stock now. (Refund). We have KL 8060, Kl 4030, KL 8078, Kl 9082 driver in stock. please check on Home for specification.

Found this Ebay seller from China that sell the 6050's.
You get (3) drivers and a BOB for $187.90 shipped, about $55 per driver, same as keling.
Three Axis Stepper motor Drivers, 60V/5.0A - eBay (item 250711171768 end time Nov-13-10 02:48:15 PST)
He has a similar package for a few bucks more.
    CNC 3 Axis Stepper motor Driver ROUTER,MILL , 60V/5.0A - eBay (item 250708547074 end time Nov-07-10 17:48:13 PST)
You could contact him and see if he'll just send you (2).
He even has links to keling so maybe they're in cahoots.
    Hoss

P.S. Noticed the BOB in his pic looks exactly like kelings KL-DB25 BOB for $28.04
kelings BOB pic seems to be a crop of his pic on Ebay. Cahoots I say.

Based on my communications with cnccomponent(ebay seller) it may be better to wait for keling to get their stock in(20 days) rather than wait the 3 weeks to 1 month for shipping if I order from cnccomponent, also the best price I could get from them was $15 more than keling.

im still waiting on one email back from cnccomponent, they sent me an invoice to pay but didnt include shipping info which made me curious...glad I checked into how long it would take. When I asked in a previous email how long for shipping she replyed"we will ship immediately after payment is recieved" lol, I like the way they side step a question.

I have been giving serious thought to ordering a pair of G201X's... what would be the Pro's and Con's to using these drives over the KL6050's? The only negative I see up front is having to use an external heatsink for anything over 5.0A and the fact that its stuck at 10 micro steps. I guess the micro step thing will allow greater resolution but maybe a lot less ipm with the stock leadscrews. I like the idea of being able to go up to 80V and 7.0A later If I get the need for speed

    any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have both the G201's and some M880 Which is the older Kl8092.

I only ran the M880 for a short time because they don't have a mid band resonance compensation so my steppers had a rather loud ring.

The Geckos have a adjustment to damp the resonance and just run smoother to me.

They are on sale now too. The micro stepping is fine unless you have a really slow computer. I bought the step board to allow lower micro stepping but I have them set to 10 now anyhow. If you want the G901 boards I have I would sell them.

The Gecko is a American made item too. The boards are done and stuffed at Gecko, no China stuff their.

I ran the KL23H2100 570 oz stepper for a bit at 70V at 7A and it make lots of power and some real speed too.

You could save some bucks and get two of the little G251 that are on sale for $49.00 and one 201 for $99 for the Z.

Did you see hoss's video of the G251 running the G704? I don't know if you would need any more power unless you plan on running on the edge of the table with a heavy load often.

I just finished installing three Gecko servo drives and I managed to get them in the PC case with a 70V 10A PS too. My IH mill is now fully cnc'ed.

For cooling I made a heat sink from some 3x3 AL tube and mounted a heat sink to the inside and a 60mm fan in the end. I don't think they need that much but it gets really hot in the summer in AZ and the computer case has no cooling fans. I did about the same thing with my 4 -201's and the have been good for years. The very small package helps them fit in smaller places but the mounting holes need to be in almost the exact right place. On the last one I used my CNC to drill the holes and they were perfect.

I already have 2 of the KL 570 oz steppers that Hoss recommended...from the website looks like the G901 wont work with the G201X but a new version is coming out. I missed the vid of the G0704 running on G251's but I think they seem like a waste of money compared to the KL6050's.
