    8 wire steppers connection

    hi everybody
i am sure that this question have been asked few times, but i didn' t find a realy answer to it
i have 4 steppers motors with those characteristics :
    model : 34HST9805-37B2
    Step angel ( ° ) : 1.8
    Rate Voltage(V) : 6.4
    Rate Current (A) : 2
    Phase Resistance ( Ω ) : 3.2
    Phase Inductance (mH) : 15
    Holding Torque (oz.in) : 880
    Lead Wire (NO.) : 8
    Rotor Inertia (kg. c?) : 7

    i have also a geckodrive G540.
my question is : what power supply do i need for them, and how can i know how to connect the 8 wires
unfortunaly, all i have is in chineese, and i don' t understand chineese

    Hi Sir

    email specification to:[email protected]

We will help you to find how to wire

You need a 48VDC,7.3A power supply

    Based on the drawing:

This is only for G540 for your refrence
    A+: Red/Blue
    A-: Yel/Blk
    B+: Wht/Brn
    B-: Org/Grn

    do that mean that :
red/blue goes to pin number 6
    yellow/black to pin number 7
white brown to pin number 8
and org/green to pin number 9

    Hi Michel.

The specs you have given are for a 124V 2A Series connected motor. If wired in Series, it will not be a good match for G540. However, wired Parallel, it would be a 61V 4A motor, and a VERY good match. At the G540 Max 3.5A, it would detune slightly to 770 Oz.

I don't have any wiring color diagram to go by, so I really hope that the wiring instructions from Keling are for Bipolar Parallel and NOT Bipolar Series.

    thank you crevice
i attach the diagram that i reiceved from the chineese seller, i am pretty sure that you do not understand chineese, but you will certainly understand better than me according to this diagram.
i want like you suggest, to connect those motors in parralel
do you mean that for a parallel connection, i need a power supply with 61v 4amp, do you know a place where i can buy one like that.[ATTACH]Click image for larger version.

You're OK. John has given you good advice for parallel wiring. Red/Blue to pin 9, Yel/Blk to pin 8, Wt/Brn to pin 7 and Org/Grn to pin 6. A 48V, 7.3A is proper PSU:
    http://kelinginc.net/SwitchingPowerSupply.html

Use a 3.5K or 3.48K current limit resistor like this one:
    3.48KXBK-ND
    http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...K-ND&x=15&y=19

While you are ordering from Digikey, might as well also get some spare F2318-ND G540 fuses:

thank you so much crevice, now i can go on and ordering what i need.
what happen if by mistake, i was connecting A- INSTEAD A+ and vice versa (also B+ instead B-) ?

i also ordered last week, a ncpod (usb emulator) to connect directly to pc via usb, i will connect it to the G540.
has anyone an idea of a possible wiring diagram between the Ncpod and the G540
the supplyer of ncpod gave me these several instructions :

"You will need to make a Pigtail connector harness that goes from the ncPod's MTA connectors to a DB25 connector. You will need to connect the Step and Direction signals for each axis along with a single Ground. You will also need to connect a switch to the G540's Enable input so that you can enable/disable the motor drivers. That's all you need to get started."

i understand that i have to do a connection from the MTA connectors from the Ncpod to the parallel port of the G540, i think that i am able to find the step and dir pins, but where do i have to connect the single ground ?
and i do not understand what is the switch to the G540

Nothing much if you switch BOTH motor wirings. If you switch only ONE, then the motor will run in reverse.

Step & direction are Parallel port pins 2-9. They will connect to pins 2-9 of DB25 connector. Single ground can go to DC negative terminal of PSU, same as G540 terminal 12 should.

    http://cnczone.com/forums/showthread...=106312&page=7

The switch is the NC EStop switch and one wire of that connects to G540 terminal 10 and the other wire also goes to the PSU DC negative terminal. I recommend THIS big red mushroom switch:
    http://kelinginc.net/CNCPackage.html

BTW, would you please post a link for those N34 motors? They are a good N34 match for the G540 and others might like to have them.

this is the link for the steppers
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:X:AAQ:US:1123

    i bought them for 309$
today i runed them with mach3, and they seemed very smooth, and have no noise at all
    michel

today, i read the gecko 540's manual, and they say there that the maximum power supply that should be used with it, have to be at a maximum of 50v
do you think that a 61v power supply will match with the G540 ?

NO!!! Absolutely not. Anything over 50V can fry G540. You CAN operate 61V motors on 48V quite well though. There are people out there getting reasonable speeds out of 85V motors with G540 & 48V. The Keling 387s that power the Iron Man router to 250 IPM are 65V motors.

    [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQsRHXumcgw&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - IronMan CNC Router 4 Axis[/nomedia]

Your motors are fairly close to optimum Voltage, and the 48V 7.3A PSU is PLENTY of power for these motors. I estimate they should be capable of 1100 to 1200 RPM with the G540 & 48V.

One thing that might be worth investigating - that same vendor sells stepper motors via aliexpress.com. In some cases, their prices are better there than their eBay prices for the same items. In other cases, their prices on aliexpress.com are laughably higher. You need to carefully examine both the item price and the shipping price before ordering (duh - but the quantity pricing including shipping can be confusing on aliexpress.com if you don't pay sufficient attention).

See http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/103343 for CHANGZHOU LONGS MOTOR CO.,LTD.

I have not looked there for these specific motors, however I recently bought a set of three 290 oz. in. 6-wire motors from them for a total of $96.00 including free shipping, IIRC (including the $5 off coupon that you get when you become a registered user of aliexpress.com).

    YMMV...

Update: It looks like you can buy four of those motors, not including the TB6560 controller or 24V 350W power supply or printer cable for a total of $276.03 including shipping to the United States here:

    http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/1...outer-KIT.html

The shipping calculator for that motor combines shipping when you specify a quantity of 4, which accounts for a significant savings - whereas with some other items, it seemingly does not. I have noticed some sloppiness in the eBay listings from this company in the past (for example, the title of the referenced eBay auction states "4-axis" and shows a photo that includes 4 steppers, while the description says "3-axis". My guess is that they work off of a "boilerplate" eBay listing, and do not carefully check to ensure that each auction corresponds with the description in all details).

Good to know doorknob, thank' s

now i am confused, i tryed to draw a DXF file with the connections from gecko G540 to the ncpod via a parallel port DB25, i opened the G540 manual to know where are the step and dir pins (2 to 9) but there is a big difference between the drawing and the list below
on the drawing of the drive for example, "pin 2 is for X axis step and pin 3 for X direction " , and in the list below "pin 2 is for A axis dir and pin 3 for A axis step"

i hope to finish this DXF file into one week, this will help me, and may be it can be used for others that are interssed.
i attach the beginning of this file
    comments will be apreciated

There are three versions of G540 manual on Gecko site. The Step/Dir list in REV1 is incorrect. The lists of the other two versions are correct. X step=2, X dir=3 etc.

I may have been unclear - the $276.03 price is for quantity 4 of model 34HST9805-37B2 NEMA 34, 880 oz. in. motors like the ones that the OP purchased, including shipping to the US...

I think this motor would be GREAT with the G540. Detuned to 770 oz at 3.5A, it is the strongest N34/G540 combo I have seen to date. This would run an (S)X3 Z axis WITHOUT special pulleys.

I hope John at Keling is looking into stocking something like this.

    I have made a mistake.

After closer examination of the Chinese diagram, I must conclude that the 2A specs are not SERIES, but UNIPOLAR wiring. The actual specs for Parallel wiring are 2.8A and 15 mH inductance. That means this motor will require 124V for best performance. At the G540 48V, the motor will run slow, so it's NOT the good match that I originally thought it was.

I'm very sorry Michel, and hope you have not already ordered it.

If you need a N34 motor to use with G540, the best one currently available is the Keling KL34H295-43-8A 906 that detunes at 3.5A to 522 OZ.
