Here's what was supposed to be a short video of a bit of the console functions but oh well.

Hoss, I was watching that console video. At 1 point you change the feed rate over ride by manually turning a potentiometer or encoder and you can visually see the DRO for it move.

I would like to implement a few manual buttons on my lathe in the next rendition of wiring. Manual feed rate over ride is 1 of them. Mostly to mimic the original flexibility of the lathe. Was this done using keygrabber? I dont see the options in hotkeys and really havent ventured into or understood OEM's and VB scripting etc. Was that a pot or encoder that you used? How many inputs did it require if that was the method of communication? 2 or 3?

    Thanks

It uses a 0-5k ohm iirc pot connected to the same place as little pot on the logitech controller, see keygrabber setup page 3 here.

I still had the controllers hooked up for things like that pot that use keygrabber but most everything else is hooked up to my Pokeys board, very simple and loads of possibilities.

I wondered about that. Pokeys has 51-56 I/O's IIRC and uses a plug in. Do you notice 1 being more responsive than the other? I am running the ESS on this. It gives me 3 potential ports. I thought I would just use a few additional pins of 2 & 3. That would work too wouldn't it?
A lazy man does it twice.

Never noticed any kind of lag using either keygrabber or pokeys, works the instant the button is pushed.
Have not tried to hook a pot up any other way than keygrabber.

    Hoss,
Really like the console. Looks like you printed almost everything on the front? Is each control group a modular box or just covers?
I ordered your belt drive dvd download last night. Quality machine tools indicated a non-specific number of around $200 for the 1100 watt motor and made it sound like he didn't really want to sell one, so I will probably do the treadmill motor.

Yes I printed most of the panels on the console, they are open back, more room for the wires.
Got my 200 psi compressor today, looks like it will do the job nicely and only $138 on ebay.

Nope, after checking the push-to-connects are rated @150 psi and the tubing only 120 psi but put in a quick order to Mcmaster and I'll have both rated to 300 psi tomorrow.

Hi all -- new to the forum and relatively new to machining. Just unboxed and cleaned the cosmo off of my G0704. Grizzly shipped next day and FedEx had it to me undamaged on the 3rd business day. I was worried about damage and poor factory QC, but I have to say, mine looks pretty good. It's dated 12/2013 and has the 3-bolt head mod already done. I also see an empty threaded hole on the rear bottom right of the head. Not sure if that is for a (not included) tramming block or there for another reason.

Thanks very much to Hoss and the rest of the community. I've followed many of these threads with great interest. I see a spindle lock, belt drive and CNC conversion in my future. I'm looking forward to more info on the Phase 3 conversion with double ball nuts.

Sorry for the hi-jack, carry on! Thanks.

adam, ditch the spindle lock idea. Use Hoss' original manual tool changing method with the flip up bar and the TTS collet.

What size Kurt "style" milling vise is appropriate for these machines?
I don't want to waste space in any direction I don't have to, or put more weight on the table than is advisable.

    Thanks Adam, welcome aboard!

Bill, a 4 inch is good for the stock mill, I use a 5 inch for mine with extended travels.

Do people prefer the machined-on-all-sides style?

In the cheaper style, are Shars and Grizzly about the same quality wise?

I will vouch for Shars (Grizzly's machines seem nice too so I am guessing their QC on vises is decent too). They arent Kurt I am sure, but they are well built, functional, reasonably priced and mine is as flat and square as I can measure. My indicator only goes to .0005 though ;-)

I'm glad someone brought this up. I have a Shars 5". I have it mounted using the lugs. It over hangs the back of the table. The lip of the vise that is. Was wondering of someone tried a Tormach 5" CNC style vise on a G0704? I'm wanting to switch to one of those.

My PM25MV came with a 3" but I got a 4" after running out of capacity on the 3" and seems to fit it perfectly and not too big, unfortunately machine shop stuff is hard to guage size from pictures as things just get scaled up or down. I think the 5" would have been a tad bigger than I needed and would have eaten up a bit of my envelope.
