What kind of motor? 1 phase? 3 phase? DC?
If just a regular 1 phase induction motor, power it up and see what happens?
What makes you think it needs checking?

How many leads and are they marked in any way.
What does the name plate say? 220/440 dual voltage?

thanks for the reply and sorry for not replying and earlier.
so this is what I gather from the motor name plate

    HP: 7.5 RPM: 1725

    VOLTS: 230/460 AMPS :22/15

    PH: 3 HZ:60

also I open the motor splice box and it has 9 wires.
the way the are connected goes like this
    4and7
    5and8
    6and9
    1is by itself
    2is by itself
    3is by itself.

my question is still can I plug this in my home garage and how can I do it.
    thanks for all the help.

It looks like it is a dual voltage star connection in both speeds.
You cannot check it on a regular domestic 1 phase supply, unless a phase converter or a variable frequency drive is used.

thanks for the info really appreciated.
I am not quiet sure on what you mean but bassicaly what your saying is I need a phase converter and a variable frequency drive to check it.
please bare with me I am not a electrician I just want to know what I need so when I do call a electrician he does not try to bulls_ _ t me around.
any ways thanks for the help if you have any more suddjestion please let me .
all I really whant to do is put the machine in the garage and put a variable frequency drive and make it run.
    thanks

One or the other, both the phase convertor or the VFD will produce 3 phase from 1 phase.
With VFD you get variable speed.

I would prefer a VFD know that you know my motor nameplate
I am going to get a VFD.
can you give some pointers on what kind I should buy also where ,
    I have thought about EBAY.
but I dont know what I should look for.
    thanks again

That is a fairly large motor for 1 phase input, look for around a 10hp that will accept 1 phase at 220/240 input.
Some here have bought the Toshiba or Fuji.
I have picked up Mitsubishi, WEG, or Telemecanique off ebay.
If getting second hand, make sure it has the program pad otherwise you would have to purchase separately.
