    Arcing from video card?

I was warming up my 1992 VMC20 yesterday and suddenly I heard something arcing inside the control cabinet. The screen started flickering and then the mill stopped and gave me a spindle error. I don't remember what the exact error was, but it was bogus anyway. I think it was actually getting feedback from the sparking somehow.

    Check this out!

If you can't see the video, here are some pictures.
There is this coil (?) at the other end of a red wire coming off of the top of the monitor.

In this picture you can see where it is arcing from the top of the coil to the plate next to it. The arc is behind the black video cable, but you can see the glow. That is a 1/4" gap.

It arcs constantly now and I get a black screen.
What do I do? Do I need a new video card? Can I just replace that coil. Will I need a new monitor too?

If there is an arcing going on in the monitor chassis, then do not even fool with it. Either replace the monitor or, if you have the expertise, repair it before it damages something else!!

    Coil shorting to ground

I had this same problem 4 or 5 years ago. On close inspection the plastic
coil had a small crack in it. CRT coils are verry high voltage and will short to ground if they can. I mixed up some 5 min epoxy (not metal filled ) and covered the crack. It is still working today.

Last time I looked a replacement monitor is aprox $800.00

I see your ghetto fix and raise you a piece of 3/16" Delrin shoved between the coil and the metal to prevent grounding.
    It works fine now. :rainfro:

Now I am getting the error message again.

"Spindle controller does not respond #48"

I shut the mill down and restarted it and it is working for now.

Dont use Delrin as it is slightly conductive due to impurities in it. ONLY USE VIRGIN TEFLON. this is what they use for huge megahertz stuff , like fighter jets space shuttle etc etc

and virgin teflon is almost as cheap.

Good to know. I have some Teflon on the shelf.

I ran the mill on Thursday and Friday with no more spindle error codes.
