    NEWBIE! I need your advice

    Hello!!
I am possibly in wrong place but i don't know where to start
I am finish carpenter , builder propose me to make some pieces (watch pic) and he would pay me even 1000$ for that , so he dont have to hire artist ,
I am thinking to get 6040 cnc router engraver from ebay and make it.

    My questions:

-is it possible to find ready templates (doesn't have to be identical) in some cnc software ?? od do i have to design in ??
    - how the hell you call this things scrolls? ornaments? decorative pieces? i dont even know how google it
    - do you think i choose good machine? i dont wanna spent over 2k though

I know that wouldnt be easy, but i wanna take this opportunity to get this machine and learn how to use it, thanks!!

I don't know what capabilities the router you mentioned has,
but as a somewhat good woodworker with CNC experience, I
would advise your to consider the following:

    1) the machine you're looking at would need 3 axis movement
in XYZ axis. The rosettes and other features in your sample are most likely
not inlays, and as such there will need to be tool path
    movements in the 3 dimensions.

    2) The router if it's fully capable for CNC, only moves in the space you
tell it to with some sort of program code. It would be rather difficult
to program the 3D machine movements without some sort of CNC
part programming software. So there might be a need to purchase
and learn some sort of CNC programming software in addition to
    the machine and controller.

These types of components are great applications for fabrication
by CNC machines, it's just that the various features of the part
i.e fultes, flares, tapers etc are non-planar and therefore making
them requires a bit of prep and planning. I don't know of any templates
so to speak, but maybe the effort and expense to take this project on
might be more than you'd be paid for it, but if you forsee doing much more
of this kind of work it may be worth it.

    Just my thoughts.....

looks like that machine is perfect , the thing is what software would be best for this job? i asked already in artcam section we'll see what they will say

The Cam software you ultimately choose will need the capabilities to
create and edit the surfaces you will be machining, and be able to drive
different kind of tools over those surfaces.

To do this kind of surface creation there are several software products
that have been in use for some years:

    GibbsCAM
    Delcam
    Mastercam

I don't work for any of these software manufacturers, but I deal with
many different shops (mostly metalworking) that use these products.

There are many other possible CAM products out there , some cheaper
than others, but as I mentioned in the first post, if you plan to do more of
this kind of work, you're going to want a software solution that can grow
with you as you make more and more complext surfaces etc.

Vcarve pro or Aspire from Vectric will do that no problem. Vectric also has a large selection of designs you can buy for a very reasonable price. Once you buy them, you can use them forever.

Vcarve pro is probably all you'd need for this project, I think it's around $500.

I would disagree with the previous poster about the CAM tools he mentioned. While they can be used to do what you want, they're way overkill, very expensive, and a more difficult way to go. The Vectric products are designed to be both design and CAM in same package and are geared specifically to the types of tasks you want to do.
