Quick one:

Somehow along the way I missed the class about quill lubrication.

I'm rebuilding a Series II, and had a jammed quill. Come to find out the old lube had dried inside the head, and a hydraulic bottle jack was needed to push past the old junk and remove the quill.

Everything is cleaned and ready for reassembly, including the inside of the head and all the spur gear parts that actually move the quill up/down. On the left side of the head, there is a threaded hole missing a fitting. This hole goes through the headwall into a groove cut in the cylinder for the quill. I had to remove a bunch of gummy lube from this slot as well.

The question: Was this dried oil, or dried grease? Is the missing fitting a grease zert or something for oil?

Thanks!
