Is there a way to make a surface and then extrude it in a rotary path. Like if you want to put flutes on a cylinder at one turn in so many inches.

Can you put a picture of what type of object you are talking about? It's hard to imagine from the text description....

Yes, that is I want to do. 8 grooves, different shape. Basically a .5 x.5 groove with a .25 fillet in the bottom. This would be in a 3 inch OD cylinder 1 turn in 10.6667 inches.

ernie not avoiding you just busy, i can get the part close
but not what i want, i did a spiral , then a sweep.250 circle,
cap the ends,stitch together, rotate with 7 copys, then add a 3in dia.
solid clyinder, then boolean away the 8 tubes ( one at a time), this gives
us the bottom or radius, but when i add the .250 straight wall to the sweep
it does not hold the contour of the 3 in part, as long as my sweep is
round is seems ok
maybe someone else can see the light

I think that you are onto something. I have never used sweep but I am playing with it tonight. I think that it will work as long as I do not keep screwing up.

Nice job dwood. Something to try to fillet the ends off. Because there are those tiny little slivers ending where the sweeps comes out of the cylinder, the fillet engine will struggle. You might try create a second cylinder and fillet the top, then delete all the surfaces but the fillet and cap, then "Extrude Surface" the fillet and cap surface to get 2 solids and boolean them together into one object.. You then have a solid with an inverse fillet that you might be able to use the boolean diff command to cut the top of the swept cut solid off to length. This would give the fillet on the ends...
If you dont follow, can you post the cylinder you are working with and I'll take a look.

Having never used sweep before, I am playing with it without luck. I can get the shape and and can get it to follow the path but it does not mate up to the cylinder correctly. I am not sure if I am selecting in the proper sequence or what. In any event it looks neat, even if wrong. If you can help I would appreciate it. Also once I have the shape spiraled around the cylinder, how do I cap the ends to make the solid?

to cap the ends under utilities , use extract edges single, then
planar surface the edges and stitch together to the tube to make solid
maybe burr can see another way to get this to to TWIST in bobcad
