tell us more, you have encoders but no display/counter? There used to be someone who sold encoder counters for some of the Chinese encoders, but I don't remember the name right now. You could change those counters to work with normal quadrature encoders if I'm remembering correctly.

If these are incremental quad encoders see this link for a diy DRO.

I still have the sofware up on my website (updated) for the lindsey dro that uses a dos based computer to interupt and display the values.

It might also give you some ideas of the trials and tribulations of the setup.

As you can see from the specs, be aware that Heidenhain can be 5v square wave or low signal sinewave. The Sine wave require a less common interface type.

Hi AL thanks for the help....I have a limited knowledge of electronics but i think i can pull this one off with a little help.. i don't understand what the difference is between 5v square wave and low signal sine wave. here is the pictures of the encoder wiring.I'm not sure how to wire it with the hard ware setup Giff below i also have an encoder interface i dont know what it is or if its usefully.
I'm hoping the transistors i bought at radio shack will work spects are below

What is the part number of the encoder? I can tell you what the output is if you are in doubt.
You will need different interface logic for each type.

Your in luck they are 5v TTL.
I guess you figured that out from the sheet you posted.

The DIY DRO that you are interested in, only uses the 5v and common and the A & B signal, so this is only four conections from the encoder.
Some have a connector and some are hardwired, I will list both.
The ROD 525 connections you want are:
    D or Brown/Green = +5v
    F or White/Green = 5v common
    A or Brown = A Pulse
    B or Grey = B pulse
    The rest, tape up.

I had a habit of amassing manuf. cat. etc back when they used to publish and send them out to users.
It has turned out very usefull when looking at older/legacy items on ebay, etc.
Actually, Heidenhain is one of the few that is very good at getting information by emailing them in a pinch.
