    tight threads with angle head

Machine: Niigata 80 Fanuc control. When using a right angle head with a 9/16-18 tap, the threads are very tight. I'm using G95 and have a metric program, Feed 1.41 Speed 170, we've checked runout on the tool which is fine, used different 9/16-18 taps, and the threads were still tight. After using a tap in the angle head, we'ld take the tap out and use it without the angle head, and the threads were fine. Any suggestions on what could be causing the tight thread? Thanks.

Check the gear ratio of the angle head. If it is not exactly a 1:1 ratio, it will mess up your threads.

The easiest way to check it is to enter a spindle speed in MDI, then verify (with a tachometer) that the spindle speed is correct.

Is the controller capable of rigid tapping in other planes? You might need some floating compensation in the form of a floating tap driver.
First you get good, then you get fast. Then grouchiness sets in.
