    Contract_Pilots G0704 (May Take a Year)

Had this G0704 about 2 Years now. Put it to some use but got distracted with the CNC lathe Project which is almost done a year later.

I have Been Slowly Collecting Parts.

I have a Spare Saddle to Mill Out.
8' of 5/8" Ball Screw and 5 Matching Nuts (Thompson) As Soon as lathe is done i should be able to turn and thread them. Will practice on scrap bar stock or threaded rod first.
    2 Unknown in-oz or Amp Nema 23 Stepper's
    1 Known 286oz 5.6A stepper
1 Unknown in-oz or Amp Nema 34 Stepper (Round Not Square)
7 10A Max Micro Step Drivers
    2 5A 80V Power Supplies

Bunch of extra ports on the PMDX-126 W/ESS Only using 2 motors on the Lathe! Unless I find a used and cheap JLD6 or Similar Tool Turret! I can dream!

All Steppers when hooked to a Driver function just unknown in-oz on 3

Been Communicating with ArizonaVideo and he Hooked me Up with Some Mounts and Brackets From His Older Roton Kits I am Excited. I Cannot wait for the metal pieces to arrive. Thanks in advance again ArizonaVideo!

    Now a Few Q's

Any way to tell how many in-oz the steppers that are missing the data labels are?
How many in-oz stepper is recommended for the 704?
Any Issues Running 2 Machines from One Controller and 1 Computer?
What type of ball screw bearings should be after?
Should I go Shaft Couplers or use Timing Pulley's and Belts?

Yes, I have read hoss's site he recommends 570oz but reading here some people had better luck sub 400 except for the Z axis unless using a gas strut or two to assist? I wIll Prob use my surplus ones to get it running. Recommendations on Steppers?

I will Update as I get progress! As soon as I receive a package of from ArizonaVideo I will come up with a conversion plan! Thinking I want to try and keep it manual and cnc?

    That's it for the Night!

The parts look like this, all I need to do is ship them.

    Attachment 291104

A few of the threads that I thread milled were backwards because I has one servo wired backwards and did not notice.

I found one more part, the Y nut holder. It does not have a clamp to clamp the threads. I was going to make them a bind fit so I keep reducing the thread mill size until it fit tight. Your threads might have a different fit.

Cannot wait to start playing with the metal parts. Going to be a fun Fall/Winter project.

Still wondering if 280-300oz 5A steppers will be strong enough for X & Y axis anyone try similar size with their 704 conversion?

They will be strong enough for all the necessary testing and most likely cutting too.

Parts arrived thanks arizonavideo.. Ultra nice packing also! Now as soon as lathe is re-controlled (moving to from mach to linux CNC with the pathpilot GUI and aditional turning functions) will turn my screws! Could not wait, I had to bolt a stepper motor on only 286in oz but it is what I have!

That stepper will do more than most give it credit for.

I'm using a 282 oz stepper on x/y on a a G0704. I test successfully at 180 IPM and run it at 150 ish with no issues. As long as it's reasonabley matched to the stepper driver I think it will be just fine.
Q: How many tools does it take before a simple task becomes a project?
A: Just one. I'm the Tool that turns a simple task in to a project.

    Re: Contract_Pilots G0704 (May Take a Year)

I ran the Z on a 3.5A driver with a 570 OZ stepper and 100 IPM was easy only making 400 oz or so.

For the X and Y a real 280 should be fine with a good driver. Then again the 570 are on sale right now for $39 at kellingers so if you want some now is a good time.

Check the parts with threads some may not be right but that's all I have of the Roton stuff.

Finally got my last ball screw and the rest of my ball nuts and my other Mesa 7I76 Card. Decided I will use Arizonavideo mounts the way they are no modification for now.

Now to finish the lathe and get the screws turned. May just use my friends manual machine. Anyone have the measurements for arizonavideo roton screws?

    OK,

I am thinking I may go with closed loop hybrid's on this system.

Opinions on? The Leadshine models below?

I run the automation technologies brand equivalent on my mill in the nema 34 frame. I absolutely love them. That said, I also had the nema 23s on my lathe, and they were garbage. They are a weird 3 pole stepper and after 6 months of working with them tuning, checking wiring, I eventually sent them back for a refund. they would spin by themselves, but didn't have enough torque to spin my ballscrew (which i can easily turn by hand)

The smaller ones are nema 24...

I would like to run Nema 34 on all 3 axis but using a arizonavideo kit and Nema 24 max for the mounts on X & Y unless there is a Nema 23-34 adapter available that's reasonable priced.

The 570 oz Nema 23 stepper is a great stepper. Its fast and makes twice the power you need to run the X and Y.

I'm running them on the X Y and Z on the PM-25 at 50V and have never lost a step and can get 150 IMP no problem.

Don't over think the drive problem. If a system never looses steps and never breaks then it is good.

I have servos on the IH mill and other than making less noise the steppers perform just as well.

The 570 oz stepper is on sale right now for $39
