To VFD in main enclosure or not?

    Howdy,

I'm currently configuring an electronics enclosure for my cnc router. I'm debating on whether or not to include the powerflex VFD into it or placing it in a remote location.
I have a nice Hoffman enclosure I picked up out of scrap from work for a couple of bucks. Its only 12x12x6" so after the mx4660, power supply, and ess it's a bit tight.
From my understanding these inverters can be a bit noisey. So, I'm undesided on including it in the control cabinet or placing it in another cabinet a few feet away.

    Any advice or experience?

    Thanks in advance.

I have always placed it in the main enclosure where possible, even two in the same enclosure with no problem as long as wiring and grounding is observed.

I'd put it in the enclosure, to keep dust out of it. People rarely seem to worry about dust controller in their cabinet, but it can be a big issue.

And, you need to keep the minimum clearance around it per the mfg recommendations.

its worth to put in the cabinet, and using some good cooling..

vfd itself, I think not noisy..

I took it the OP meant Electrically Noisy?

12x12x6 is probably not big enough to have that drive inside it unless you have forced cooling. The drive manual has a section in it covering minimum cabinet sizes for installation.

Yes. This is what I meant Al.

Thanks for the replies guy's. I think I'll try to get it in there. That way I won't have to run a spindle speed control cable between two enclosures.
I have a great piece of heatsink extrusion I was gonna use on the vfd. I'll have to see if the enclosure depth will accommodate.

Thanks Jake. I think you're right. the side clearances aren't much to worry about, but Allen Bradley does suggest a lot of top and bottom clearance. I have two muffin fans I picked up from radio shack before they closed. one 12V the other 120V. 54 and 84 cfm. The vfd and 48V chinese supply have built in fans. The vfd fans are intense. Its a little tricky thinking about how to install one or two of these muffin fans in such a way that all components are going to see semi-decent air flow. I'm still on the fence. I might pick up another box for the vfd or a larger one for everything.
