Can somebody help me with the correct procedure for the replacement of the axial bearings on the ends of the Y axis ball-screw in a MX45 VAE Vertical Machining Center?

Can this procedure be done without dsimounting the saddle and the ram head?

How can I diagnose that these bearing need replacement?

It's quite strange that Y axis end bearings are dead on this machine. The axis carriage linear bearings are more likely to be faulty.

Yes, I guess. You need to take external covers and samurai covers in order to gain access to the axis ends. You need to take the table also

How can I diagnose that these bearing need replacement?

Noise. Excessive resistance during movement. Easy to detect axial backlash. You need to loosen the carriage in order to understand where the fault exactly is.

Regarding the symptoms; the only one is that the Y zero is lost only in very long programs. I find no evidence of either noise or sticking of the linear bearings.

the Y zero is lost only in very long programs

it's not related to Y axis bearings.
could be encoder fixture, ball-screw nut linear bearings, many reasons of fault. Check the motor connection to axis first.
