    Fanuc spindle position error

Hi everyone, could you guys help me because I'm having a lot of trouble with my vertical lathe! It is not even that old, but it has some problem with spindle encoder or positioning in general.

If I run it in full speed 1500rpm and hit the brakes, I get 9087 s-spindle error (al-087)! I found from the manual that it is possibly the spindle encoder having trouble sensing the full rotation signal. I opened the motor and the encoder looks clean and fine, there are two gears rotating by it, the other has maybe 100 teeth and other just 1.

This does not occur every time and I discovered that it gets worse when the program uses rotating tools and thus also C-axis. Then it tilts nearly every time when the spindle is unlocked and used for turning, even with a lot lower speeds! Sometimes it does this also when accelerated but mainly when deaccelerated.

What could cause this behavior? Can it be fixed if I move the encoder closer to the teeth, or does it get worse?
Also, what would be the correct assembly distance for the encoder?

    Thanks.

    New discovered symptoms:
The machine gets error at de- or acceleration always only once after the use of C-axis. Once it has tilted, it works like a charm when de- or accelerating, until I lock and unlock the C-axis again and try turning, and the pattern repeats.

Can the problem be in the encoder when the machine behaves like this? I mean, how could the error, and acknowledging it with reset, on the control have any affect to the encoder.

is it direct couples or belt driven,
if it is belt -- use belt dresser spray ( if not timing belt)
If timing belt --check belt teeth
if direct couples -- try to replace the pulse coder sensor.
distance should be nearly paper thin
    check motor bearing play....

    Fanuc spindle position error

Built in sensors should be gapped with a scope, but .004-.006 is about normal.
