    Stepper gearing and resolution

I'm building a stepper motor based CNC Plasma table. We can skip for now the stepper/servo debate and stick with stepper.

I'm using NEMA 34 motors from keeling. I could not find the max RPM on the web site, but from poaking around on forums I've heard 200 tossed around as the Max RPM for a NEMA 34. Not sure this number is accurate or not. If 200 is true and I had my table grades so that 1 step is 1 thousandth. 200 RPM x 200 steps per revolution roils only yield 40 IPM. Is my math correct? 40 IPM is way too slow so 1 thou per step is way too much resolution. Perhaps this is where the micro stepping comes into play? Am I off track here? On a typical machine of this type what is the 1 step resolution?

    Thanks
