    Smile stepper motor torque

I have a project in which I would like to use a stepper motor to control the ring gear speed of a planetary gearset to control output speed..The main duty of the stepper would be braking; holding the speed of the ring gear from free wheeling..How are stepper motors rated for holding torque and can I build a control that can vary the speed of the motor and run everything on 24v max..Thanks, Seb.

So, the stepper is just acting as a brake or is it also what is driving the mechanism?

Yes, it would be acting as a brake..I plan to have a brake assist to help the stepper; the more resistance to speeding up the stepper has the more the brake would be applied.
