To elaborate a little more on the cylinders movement, it doesn't just push down on the drawbar (and the spindle). It actually squeezes the bellevilles without loading the spindle. That is when the lower plate (steel) rises. Repeatability should be better this way over the MAD in the beginning.
A lazy man does it twice.

    Hoss,

I read through as much as I could dig up on the speed control portion fo your build. I noticed that the C6 boards are backordered but i noticed that the C11 board is described as having a built in variable speed control 0-10vdc. I imagine I could use that board instead of a C10 and C6 but just wanted to see what your thoughts were on the matter from your experience and looking back on it from your perspective. obviously there would be a price increase but the C11 board appears to have some other good features that may justify the extra expense? Thoughts?

You could also use the C41 board.

Repeatability would be the same, it comes from the tool holder touching the spindle nose.

    Aren't you planning on running a g540?

It's really to keep from putting 1500-2000lbs of downward force on the spindle, and spindle bearings.

After contemplating it for some time, it continued to bug me that i may be underpowering the mill and being in the performance industry....... well..... the desire to go to a proven setup and more power got my vote in the end.

I had already purchased the 570 motors a few weeks back and have on order now (due in wednesday a C10 board and 3- 5056D drivers you listed on your source page. I will share my existing 48v 12.5amp power supply from my plasma table setup so it didn't hurt the wallet too much.

My replacement motor arrived from Grizzly, i will be using it as some of the money i had originally put aside for a motor upgrade got used on the new drivers.

Off to wire in the replacement motor.....

any thoughts on the correct BOB to use for spindle control? I keep going back and looking at the C11 but am about to take a look at the C41 mentioned a few posts up.

    Back to work!

small issue with the new motor installation, according to the manual, the black motor wire is supposed to go to temrinal number 2 (on the black cylinder in the control box) and the white to terminal number 6. this runs the motor backwards. conventional wisdom tells me switching them will make it run correctly however now that the manual is misleading me i am a bit gun shy to hook it up that way, maybe those aren't the correct terminals? can anyone verify the correct wiring for me?

    Thanks in advance!

    Chris

If they are backwards the motor will just turn opposite, no big deal, flip them back then.

    tormach tool holder collet

    Hi Hoss,

I have used the tormach tool holders before with a tormach collet. I had trouble with the collet. If I let the bellvilles pull on the collet without a tool in the collet, the collet ID would get smaller and it was VERY difficult to insert a tool holder. I have seen you close the collet without a tool holder and then go and pick up another tool without a problem. I am now thinking that I may have had a bad collet? What brand do you use? Lyndex, or ..... Im I correct that you don't have any problems with the collet ID getting smaller?

    Thanks

I'm not Hoss but I use the TTS and have for awhile. I haven't had any issues with the Tormach collet but I had some issues with some no name imports.

I actually doubt it does them anygood though, being pulled up tight with nothing in there.

I've been letting the collet retract without a holder for ages, often leaving it that way overnight or longer
with not one bit of trouble putting in the next tool.
I'll have to have a look at it for the brand but it's likely not an import and
    not one from tormach.

Sounds like the collet is being pulled to far into the spindle causing it to become bent. A simple solution would be to make a spacer that slips into the spindle just long enough to limit how far the collet can be pulled in. Another thing that might work is to reduce the number of bellevilles your using. I use a Tormach collet on my SX2 and because the clearances are so close on my power drawbar assembly that when I leave the tool holder out of the spindle the drawbar bottoms out on the air cyclinder limiting the travel enough to not damage the collet, which is another way to deal with the problem.

Sean, The easiest fix is don't let it close without a tool in there.

Any newbies interested in knowing what it would cost to convert a G0704 to cnc
and be able to make chips with it can check out my conversion costs here.
    Shop Info
Even if you don't have any tooling to start with it's quite affordable, less than $2700.
Could be as little as $1900 for the DIYer with a little shop already.

This will provide all the air I need now for the pdb and atc swingarm cylinders.
Has better scfm than some of the bigger models.
5 times the capacity of what I have been using.
Electric Air Compressor - 2-1/2 HP, 10 Gallon, 125 PSI
Haven't run it yet to compare noise levels, still tidying up.

    Tormach collet

    Hi Hoss,

Thanks for the answer. I must have had a bad collet or tormach was not counting on people using a PDB. I had that setup before tormach came out with their PDB. I only had 900 # on the belville stack. It was a manual activation and if I accidentally hit the close button without a tool in place (which I would do occasionally when I was tired) it would instantly suck the collet in to the point where it was really difficult to insert a tool holder.

    Thanks

    Sean

Yeah, this video shows the collet closing without a tool several times with no ill effects.
The bellevilles are 1800lbs and close the collet near completely.
A good collet shouldn't bend out of shape.
