    Advice on best motion.

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice.

I'm buying a machine from China. They are open to custom options.
I have asked them about hiwin linear rails and ball screws on all axis as I'm thinking this is better (reading lots of posts)

On a 4x4 router whats your opinion on the best motion setup?

    Thanks

Hiwin or THK raills and ballscrews with at least a 10mm pitch.

    Thanks Gerry,

Thought the rails and ballscrew would be the best setup.
I take it the smaller the pitch the more precision?

    Thanks again

All other things being equal, a lower pitch gives you more steps per inch (or mm). However, for a router, a lower pitch will give you slower top speeds, and can result in screw whipping, as the screw will need to spin much faster.
10mm pitch would be the minimum that I'd use. If you want to go faster than 400-500ipm, then you should go with a 20 or 25mm pitch with a belt reduction, depending on the motors you're using.

Researched the topic and it seems helical rack and pinion is best for higher speeds
