So, has anyone done the job themselves? With some quality bearings?

Hi - I did that back in about 2008 - but I did not make videos then.
I fitted a preload spring to allow for thermal expansion and it is much cooler running and quieter than my newer 1100.
There is a thread on it back then...cheers keen
Just curious.
But, why would the spindle bearings need replacing in your 770?
Does TORMACH use cheap, inferior quality spindle bearings?
I'd think that even basic-quality bearings should last many years without wearing out.
Flood coolant is the main reason for Tormach bearings needing to be replaced. There is nothing to prevent coolant from splashing up and contaminating and or washing away the grease in the lower bearing. Several people have made their own slinger rings to prevent it from getting to bearings.
Why not simply replace the stock bearings, at least the lower one, with sealed, or at the very least shielded, bearings, like most other machines? A sealed replacement should be available in precisely the same size. The part number for a rubber-sealed bearing would be the same except for an added "2R" suffix.

Last weekend I was just doing some maintenance and checks on the mill and was tracking down a oscillating whine that's gotten a little louder recently. At the time I was concerned that it was the spindle bearings so I started gathering info. Turns out it was the motor. Belt off same sound. So thanks for the replies everyone. I'm changing directions on this hunt for now.
