    haas lathe advice

    Hello all,
We are considering purchasing a used Haas lathe. I have a few questions.

    1. Most of the used lathes I see on-line are 'SL' models, are the 'ST' models
on Haas' website simply a newer generation with similar features?

    2. What are your opinions on servo bar feeders for occasional (maybe 25% or less) use? Are they worth the extra investment in time savings over a turret mounted puller, or are they more trouble than they are worth? I realize they take up a lot more floor space.

    3. Our most demanding (power wise) application is roll forming a 1-16 thread in mild carbon steel. Will the 20 HP models be sufficient for this?

    4. I have never run a machine with a tool measuring device. I assume once you're used to them, it's hard to go without?

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Lorne Martin.

Don't swap your Haas mill for a Haas lathe. They do not operate the same. You will be disappointed.

Yes, the ST is the latest generation of the lathes but still very similar.

I will let others chime in on application questions.

Unless I missed something, it just sounded like he was looking to purchase a used lathe; not swap a mill for a lathe.
But you are correct that anyone who does this would be disappointed.

crazycnc, on a side note, next time post your questions in the Haas Lathe forum. You will probably get better responses.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your input, I didn't realize there was a Haas lathe forum, I will re-post there.

txcncman, could you clarify, were you implying the Haas lathes are not as good as the mills, or only that the lathe should not be used for mill work?
