    Threading question..

So I have a Taig lathe that I turn metal and wood on.. I was wondering, can I thread wood? I have a die holder and I have taps for the tailstock, I was just wondering if I can thread wood or not, before I mess up my tap and die set.

    I'd like to do 1/2-13 and 3/4-10.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you can thread wood. Generally the harder the wood (oak) the better it threads. But, tap and die is not the best way to do it. Single point and form tools are the way to go. And acme or modified round threads will work better too. Realize that a wood thread will never be as strong as a metal one. Better to use some kind of capping and insert method if possible.

Thanks man! Yeah what I'm trying to do is to stick 2 long tubes together that I've made out of Jatoba and Black Walnut. I want them together permanently so I'm guna use some CA glue on the threads, I just want it to be as strong as I can get it. I'm making a blowgun by the way, in case anybody was curious.

Haha yeah I know. That sounded bad. Anyhow, seriously though all you need is a small mesh net on the mouthpiece so that ya don't inhale the dart.
