Mazak VTC-41 Dead, Nothing, Zero, Nadda.. Just completely OFF!!

I have a wee bit of a problem. Our CNC operator was running our Mazak the other day when all of a sudden the machine just completely stopped. No error codes, no lights, no power or anything for that matter. Just completely dead.. Our electrical engineer as done everything that both Mazak and Yaskawa recommended and we still have a dead machine. I've done a lot of searching on the internet and only find troubleshooting information for error codes that are displayed on the operator panel. Haven't found anything relating to a machine that just completely shut off and won't turn back on.

Anyone have similar issues with their machines before?

    Any help is much appreciated.

If the machine is completely dead, then I would start at the main power to the machine. If you have power to the machine on all 3 phases, then the next place to look is the control power circuit. You just have to systematically trace the power through the various components from the distribution panel through the machine. This applies to any troubleshooting, not just Mazak.

A friend of mine had this problem with a Fadal, turned out it was the circuit breaker in the main shop distribution panel. The Fadal tech was not able to find the problem, he never considered that the problem could be external to the machine. I recently had a similar problem with my welder plug, the lug in the shop panel was burned off where the breaker plugged into it..

    What type of control?
    Mazatrol M32 or M-Plus?

Thank you for the advise. Unfortunately our electrical engineer checked that and all is good.

That being the case, and given that everything is dead, the next question is: Where do you lose power? The symptoms would indicate that it has something to do with loss of control power. Is there power on both sides of the control transformer? Downstream of the control power fuse or breaker? A bad connection on the return bus? Bus tie connectors are notorious for losing continuity in machines, especially those with the screw in the middle of the terminal strip. 24VDC power supply OK?

In about 45 years of troubleshooting machines, I have found problems like this normally have a simple solution. These are the easiest to find, the ones that really give you a headache are the intermittent failures. It's just a step by step process.
