    tallest part on tormach

Whats the tallest part you've machined on your tormach? I just had to do a 4" tall piece, it seemed like I was pushing it with stick out. Curious as to how tall a part you have successfully done.

    Re: tallest part on tormach

I've machined the top part of a 6" part on an 1100.
    Important bits:
    - I didn't have to reach all the way through it, only an inch or so
    - I clamped the part to the table, not a vise
    - because there wasn't much stick-out (stubby tools) there was no problem with vertical clearance

I can imagine having to get to the bottom with a long drill would be more trouble ...

I've also machined 4" parts where I reached to the bottom with a 1/4" long carbide end mill. That chattered a fair bit...

    Re: tallest part on tormach

I milled the edges of a 7x20x1/2 piece of tooling plate on my 770 to make a vacuum chuck. I have an 8x16 angle plate with heavy ribs that was purchased years ago on clearance from Enco. By bolting the angle plate to the table and clamping the tooling plate to the angle plate with Kant-Twist clamps the setup was quite rigid with a stickout of perhaps a quarter-inch.
