    Engraving slate

Sorry if this post is in the wrong section,

I have recently built myself a cnc machine and got to grips with engraving wood. I have been asked if I am able to put a logo on to a piece of roofing slate, which I can but the issues I gave is

    1) what is the best type of cutting too to use
    2) what spindle speed
    3) what plunge speed
    4) what cutting speed (IPM)

I know I can work out 2,3 and 4 but don't really want to burn any cutting bits out if I can help it.

    Thanks jay

    Re: Engraving slate

Best cutters i have found Engraving | NICOLAI DIAMANT
you will see they have all the feeds and speeds. I run at 9000 rpm ( but have got 12Kw , and feed side ways at apx 3 foot a min. Please note there is alot diffance types of slate and there fore hardness and the workability can be worlds apart.

i have all ways found , less down feed in both speed and step is best, if you wont to cut a vee say 1/8' deep do this 2 steps . working wet is a must ( flood the job i have a 1 1/2 "pump dumping water all over it ) on slate as the heat will build up very fast and the slate will chip, also the dust is not good for you !
The clamping down is the most important part as you will get some vibrations.Attachment 259680

    Good luck
