File transfer to/from usb drive giving gibberish

We are a Mits and Okuma house, but are supplying a machine to a customer who requested a Fanuc control. So now we have a 31i+ on a vertical mill, but our experience with certain features on the control is limited.

We have been able to get as far as selecting device "17" which appears to work sort of... The program we saved from the control to the thumb drive looks like this:
    ¥
    Ïžž5²(ÒÅNªDÉAMªSÅÔ©
    G05P0
    (ª G0± ÉNÔÅÒ ÌÏÃK ÏÆÆ ª©
    £²œ£Ž
    M05
    £±±žœ0
    ÉÆÛ£±9ÅÑ£0ÝGÏÔÏ3Ž
    M9žPž·99
    ÉÆÛ£6NÅ£0ÝGÏÔϱ
    ÉÆÛ£·ÅÑ£0ÝGÏÔÏ3Ž
    GÏÔϲ

    etc

Couple of things... The program appears to be the correct length, just the wrong characters. Not shown here is a non-printing eob character that is not a standard cr/lf.

Searching online for the steps to do this correctly is not very fruitful. We may just not be asking the right questions, or not even know what the right questions are.

Is there a step-by-step guide for saving/loading programs via thumb drive? Certainly it can't be this difficult to do something so basic.

Thanks, and sorry for the newbie question.

Try changing the punch code or program format or both. Just to see.
