Resurrection of an old thread here...but has anyone pursued this any further?

I've been thinking about trying to convert a large format printer to print on foam board (like available at Dollar Tree). I'm just curious if simply raising the print head carriage and various supporting structure with spacers (custom height, 3D printed) to change the gap to allow the ~5mm thickness of the foamboard to pass through. As far as the printer is concerned, it'll think it's still printing on "roll paper," unless there is some sensor that tells the printer the thickness of the paper it's printing on.

Thoughts?
