    which Path to use?

    Hi guys!
I have this part made of 4140 that I'm trying to cut a pocket in. I'm new to MasterCam (X7) and don't understand all the different pocketing options. I have seen peel mill and like the looks of it but it seems that it's for slots only.
What high speed path would you suggest for the squarish pocket being .400 deep? And the long slot being 1.00 deep (all the way through)?
The machine has a max spindle speed of 8000rpm using a BT40 system and a Fanuc control.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Can you mill the slot 1/2 way from each side? Drill some entry holes, dynamic mill pocket, maybe ramp mill deep portion of slot.

Darth what RDSNX did for you looks good except you want start the helix from the top of the pocket as it will collide with the material and break the tool at GO motion into the part.

I don't have MC available right now but I believe I pre-drilled for Dynamic milling routine.

you are correct you did but not a big enough diameter for the tools helix. so you can set for a smaller helix or start at the top..

    Re: which Path to use?

I didnt actually use his program. I looked at it and wrote my own using his basic technique. I do thank you for the time you put tho!
But I'm still at a loss as to how you choose feeds and speeds for the high speed stuff.

    Side note:X7 put a feedrate of G98 F72.xx on a drill. I didnt check it........crunch.

And YES the part can be flipped. That is what I plan on doing.

I dont have internet at home so I have to wait till I get to work.

I should have included a caveat that it was programmed at lunch in haste and that I haven't been on MC in years. Jay caught one mistake, I'm sure there were more. Hope I didn't screw you up.

As for feeds and speeds, I've been using Volumill on hard metals for years and I find Helical Solutions Milling Advisor is a good starting point.

    Re: which Path to use?

Just tried that feed and speed program. I used the lesser of all values. When I saw it go I thought "Aw shirts! Time to buy an end mill." But it worked out great. Wish I had it yesterday when I was pocketing!

Thanks again for the input guys!!!!
