    Sieg vs Optimum

    Hi all,
I am about to buy a bench top lathe but can't decide between Sieg and Optimum. Thé models are
Sieg X2 (550mm distance between centers)
    Optimum d250x550 (same as above)

    Costs are about the same.

    Which one would you recommend?

    Thanks a lot.

    Re: Sieg vs Optimum

    The optimum looks nicer.
What I have from them (Optimum) is the same made in china stuff, not too good technically.
Heaviest 220V drill press they make, about 600€.

Drill chucks was bad (although its a Rohm).
Too tight on belt (its about 10 mm too short).
    Floppy.

    Major disappointment.

My tiny 7x lathe is ok.Chicom.
My heavy industrial lathe is fantastic. Chicom. (Chester Craftsman, 12x24", 350 kg).
Drill press (70 kg). Chicom. Fine.

My 12x24 is 3x heavier, and about 8x better than the Optimum, imo, ime.
Its a chinese lathe, with weak fit and finish, and excellent rigidity and very good spindle at 4 microns TIR.

It now has a 1 micron real-world mechanical resolution (30.000 steps/turn, 0.16 micron step size, with servos).
I changed my stock x axis screw (16 mm) to a 0.750" == 19 mm, overconstrained ballscrew. Its now 14x stiffer, 3x more efficient and with 1/10 the stiction.

I am now fitting a c-axis with an indexed servo-driven spindle to mine.
y axis to come, with live tooling.

    Re: Sieg vs Optimum

Thanks for the reply. I don't know much about the Sieg as it is not that popular in Turkey but Optimum. I am aware that Optimum is originally Chinese and Sieg is Spain (I guess).

I'm about to sell my Proxxon PD230 and buy a D250x550 Optimum.

My favorite brand is still Proxxon because it is damn strong and precise but the one I have is a little small so I need one larger. The Proxxon has PD400 lathe which suits best my requirements but it is expensive and the kit doesn't include much accessories, that are expensive as well.

    Best,
    Suat

I have an optimum lathe, similar to the one you are looking at. Both Seig and optimum are made in China. For me a key feature would be a variable spread spindle. I hate changing belt position. One selling point for the optimum are the aftermarket products. They have a cnc upgrade kit for that lathe.

    Re: Sieg vs Optimum

Weird thing that Optimum is selling a normal version and a Vario version of their lathes. The normal version include a 750watt (max 2000 RPM) motor and the Vario has 1500watt (max 4000 RPM) motor. In a lathe I'm skeptical about high speed on a lathe as I need torque instead.

I don't know what other differences there are.

SIEG stands for Shanghai Industrial Equipment Group. Therefore, SIEG is also made in China

    Re: Sieg vs Optimum

    Hi,

Thanks for your answers. I bought the Optimum d210x400. Cheap and Chinese. Damn heavy. It needs some modifications like motor upgrade (electronic speed controlled) and QCTC. I tested the runout and it's not really bad. I like it. I'm now building a bench for the lathe.
