The most *likely* issue is that you're hitting the 2GB process max in 32-bit Windows. Unless the process is specifically large-address-enabled, even if your PC has more than 2GB, the OS can't address...

Re: AutoCAD workflow.... ideally, I'd suggest modeling the whole ski as a 3D model.... so you're creating the PTex, core strips, topsheet and top/bottom mold all in 3D space. This is better (IMHO)...
