I working with the same thought, the DB9 on the Gecko G540 are not ground to anything as via opening the controller and viewing the metal shield terminator.
I have search many times on the Web and...

The Gecko G540 controller box has Nonconductive coatings to prevent grounding or any continuity. So adding a grounded wire to Box will not work as grounding the controller.
