It looks great but how do you keep the wood from chipping out? Whenever I get too fine of detail I start to get chipping. I like alder which helps but cheap cedar and pine kill me... What wood...
If you're really looking for cheap PS you can build a pretty cheap linear supply from a disembodied microwave transformer and a few components.. I ran 40V at about 10 amps for years on one of these...
Super easy to do....
1) Cut the design slightly deep (say 0.03) into the wood...
2) After cut slather it with sealer to close up wood end grains
3) Slather paint in the recessed areas you want...
While I'm nowhere close to covering my hobby-ish hours the parts are all paid for from oddball jobs and ebay auctions of industrial junk.....
My painting and 'sharpie' has even gotten better.
I got tired of having to correct my BIOS settings every time I cycled power because my battery was dead..
While I had the whole think taken apart.. I replaced the Drive with a 60 GB SSD drive.. ...
Yeah I realize that I can buy them off ebay for almost what the AL cost me but there is something about I figured it out here at home... Where no schedule exists it's a lot more fun...
Replacing...
Good to hear...
While I was in the shower one day my kid (just graduated HS) whipped together a google sketchup of my fireplace and mantle... I was impressed.
I did not mean to say the bars...
Someday I have to figure how to use whatever software folks are using for simple 3d renderings. I like your picture!
Your gantry looks great but I'd reccommend against the unsupported rails that...
Check out my ad in the classifieds!
As part of my big upgrade I'm moving to motors that are too big to run with my HobbyCNC controller.... In come some Geckos to replace my gantry and X drive.
It's still fun to make machine parts...
I start from a small on-line generated toolpath and modify it for the keyway cutter
something like. This one creates a keyway 2 inches long centered at 0.
I x/y/z-zero the unit in above where I...
Killing two birds with one stone, I now exhaust the router above the dust boot.. This has the added benefit of lowering the boot nearly an inch and it seals much better...
An easy fix, two years...
I don't claim to know at all what I'm doing cutting something other than wood but volunteered to cut a piece of aluminum for a buddy this weekend and figured I'd better test to see how it works...
Just thought it looked impressive but I was leveling a hunk of wood I bought. The thing was too thick to fit under my gantry so I had to write a program to resurface from rear to front (which would...
Brrrrr, I'm so spoiled, If the Garage goes below 50 or so I bail and go play on the computer...
Looks very nice!
Did you move it out of the garage to a studio for the shoot? I really need to give my garage a organize and clean.... or not.
I'm betting you can get better then +/- 0.01,...
I've spent time to get the Router and Vacuum tied into the Mach spindle control..
I used the machine to cut out a crate and forms to hold a couple NEMA 34 steppers and did not take a picture but...
Hi Carve One...
I'm feeling bad now.. I did not mean to alter your design.. I just wanted to pontificate from my soapbox... I do like the 'unobtanium' prototype material.
As you've certainly...
I've had this discussion with a few folks but I'll do it again... With the hinge of your drive plate off the plane where the pinion and rack meet you will have an asymmetric force applied to the...
I think they look pretty cool. Unless you can find a reason that wood here will destabilize your design it saves money and machining... and adds a bit of wood CNC retro to the beastie!
Great...
On my old Mach-2 controlled machine I am used to using the arrow and PgUp/PgDn keys as a course jog.. Then I can use Ctrl-PgDn for instance as a fine jog when I'm really setting the height.
On...
It's still weird to see it cutting after all this time... Here's a video of surfacing my table.. It will still cut a bit bigger but I'm still cagey about the 200IPM cuts..
It's also clear that I...
When I took it apart to tighten up I've started putting a coat of paint on it... Opinions please...
Just a thought, it's supposed to be Allis Chalmers red but it looks kinda blood red... (gulp)....
Wow! What a find...
"Steppers Too Big?"... Unless they are NEMA-42, It's not really possible.
No idea if it's commercial or not but I'm sure that with a few Geckos and Mach or EMC you could...
That's a tough call, assembling and disassembling is kinda required... Did you have an opinion about filed flat spots? (Ok... Dremeled flat spots.).. Is it a bad thing to do... I can also put...
I use a 0.125 single-flute plastic bit from Amanna, It works pretty well at 10000 RPM and about 20IPM. I'd tru to go faster but 20IPM is the accurate limit of my home-built machine
My vacuum attachment is looking way too elaborate... I have a bunch of acrylic so I may try to make it anyway but now I understand why folks just mount the vacuum hose right in front of the...
Made some more progress, but have a large billiards tournament this weekend... Not to sure how much time I'll get in the garage...
I actually cut some parts last night (mounts for my limit...
Yeah, I've already thought about that... My #1 machine is still only partially painted from 3 years ago....
But I do have paint!....
Fortunately the Baltic birch is pretty tough stuff...
