sounds like it could be a break in one of the wires to me.
easy to check and cheap to fix if it is.

if the prblem moves axis when you cahnge the wiring I would say it points to the driver being faulty.
Does the creep happen when the spindle is switched off?

The cutter will depend on the size of the characters you want to engrave, how big are they and possibly what font?

I do get fed up with spam messages trying to sell something you haven't asked for...

with powdercoat you might get some unusual finishes when it melts, I would get a piece tested if you haven't already.
