Mike post #229 is now on page 3. It's kind of a strange site but page one or the most recent post will always come up on your favorites. On PM and HMEM I have to update my favorites whenever there's...
Hi Mike,
Go back to page two and down to #229.
The page numbers are at the bottom and top of each page.

Missed your sentence about the D1 taper being bitten off otherwise I wouldn't have wrote that reply.

I know I don't know your situation but I'm on my third replacement spindle. The first was cosmetically rough on the corners and the threads were buggered but also fixable but I could have cleaned...
Mod four is a heavy gauge but flexible plastic notebook cover I made two splash guards or dams to keep oil out of the headstock. I'll rough them up and inside the headstock and epoxy in place. Plenty...
Mod III was drilling pulley side drain at same height as chuck side drain which is center of lowest roller and right where Timkin recommends a drain to stop surging/friction/heat build up. Don't...
Mod II is replace the standard transmission bearings with FAG P fives from "Locate Ball Bearings".

Here's some photos of the four spindle oil mods starting with Mod I did just after getting the lathe, makes it easier to get oil in. Basically drilled out the spring and ball and turned brass plugs...
I was referring to the "List thread"
Hello Gambit how you doing?

Not much backlash in my crosslide and if you lap the gibs even better. There has been some issues with the spindle but not on the newer ones, I think it was a bad batch made in 2011 but not confirmed...
Just to update you on my spindle lube mods I purchased some FAG P5 bearings from " Locate a bearing". drilled out the ball and spring in the grease fittings and turned brass plugs for them. Took...
Somehow I started another thread but didn't mean to. Anyway I'm looking to upgrade my list and if you could give the s/n, mfg date, where it shipped from and spindled issue, or no issue.
Thanks,...
EDN: just read your post and I would just file those threads clean on the pulley side and that scratch will make no difference to the machine's operation as long as there's no burrs sticking up....
Looking for Ser #'s, mfg dates, and where it shipped from and if any grease in bearings or other spindle issues to update my list.

This post is a mistake, don't know how to un-do
If you're wondering why stopped posting to the old thread I got extremely busy at work and couldn't do three threads. I kept PM and HMEM going and almost stopped HMEM. PM is at 29,000 views and HMEM...
Awhile back I made a mod to the spindle lube setup on the 8K. I drilled out the ball & spring in the oilers and made brass plugs.
Mod two is made from a heavy but flexable plastic folder I cut fit ...
I'm still making a list of 8K's. The following I don't have info for:

This thread is an accident
According to Papa Grizzly the lathe will be discontinued, according to tech support, not discontinued.
That's one hell of a list of not available parts, makes me think about returning it and get a...
Funny, had someone else speculate that they changed from oil to grease when I found grease in my bearings. I respectfully suggest starting a new thread on 8K problems, that's not why I started this...
I measured the bearing seats and came up with 1.7706" on both. I can't get an accurate measurement of the bearing ID, I don't have an inside mic or a bore gage big enough. I believe .0005" per inch...
This is how I'll use them in the future, Fill it to the as yet to be determined ML and let it drain in slowly as the bearing warms up, one on each side.

Other options are fine if your lathe is out of warranty. I work on Generac generators everyday and the warranty solutions come from tech support and then are implemented. I agree this is an unusual...
I'm not going to argue over oil or grease, one factor to consider is shop and spindle temperature, you would have to monitor that very closely with grease if you have a cold shop that you warm up. I...
