RS232 Switch on a New Windows 7 System

    Hello,

I'm assuming that a number of you gentlemen have already faced this issue and solved the associated problems.

We've got an old Windows XP system at the shop with an automatic RS232 Switched Port (16 banks ?). We use Griffo brothers to store data offline and other software for drip feeding. Well, the short story is that the XP system decided to go to sleep forever today.

I have read that many suggest just finding an old XP system and continuing to use that OS. With the age of that operating system and with the new vulnerabilities it opens us up to, I'd like to consider upgrading to a new(er) computer and operating system.

Can anyone make any suggestions? We've got 2 mills and 4 lathes to connect ASAP. Then more to add as time allows.

Can I use a USB to RS232 Cable to connect to the switch? Are there any resident drivers in, for example, Windows 7 that would support that switch? Does anyone know if there are drivers available for older serial switches?

I greatly appreciate any and all suggestions you might be able to offer.

    Thanks,
    Paul

I would recommend to use RS232-to-Ethernet converters like MOXA Nport 5110 instead of RS232-to-USB cables. These converters (rs232-ethernet) work much stable than rs232-usb.

Thank you very much for your help. I will certainly check into that converter. Given that a few of the machines are circa 1990, I'm not very sure of what would work best.
