RS232 Problems With Fanuc 10T..Have tried everything!! Need ADVICE!!

I have a Daewoo Puma 10S with a Fanuc 10T control. Lathe has been punching and reading fine for last two years and has now started throwing the SR820 - DR OFF alarm. I have replaced the cable twice..no change. Tried it on a different computer..no change. Replaced both the 75188 and 89 IC's on main board (already had installed sockets from previous problem a couple of years ago with it not punching but would receive)....still same alarm. Also have made a cable with this pin out from a post from Dan Fritz :

25-pin male (Fanuc side) ----------- 9-pin female (PC side)

    pin 1 --------------- shield
    pin 2 ------------------------------- pin 2
    pin 3 ------------------------------- pin 3
    pin 5 ------------------------------- pin 7
    pin 7 ------------------------------- pin 5
    pins 6 and 8 ------------------------ pin 4

Stil doesn't work.... I have tried everything I know and have read on this forum and the internet. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

    Thanks,
    Ken Herring

Usually on the 10 series there is another port, if yours has it you could try switching over.
    I always use the 3 wire cable with 4-5 & 6-8-20 jumpered on the 25pin RS232.

Thanks for the reply Al. I just tried the 3 wire cable and that didn't work either. The only only plug is a Honda plug next to the rs232 plug on the back. Is there another RS232 plug hid somewhere or do I have to use the Honda plug to try another port?

    Thanks,

I don't remember the Honda/port numbers, but on the type with a remote operator station there is usually always one (Honda), but being a lathe I am not sure where that would be.
I have the 10 RS232 manual if you want PM me an email add.
It claims 2 sockets on the main board.

Al is right there are 2 RS232 ports on that controller. One is on the master board and the other is next to the monitor. I believe they both are labeled CD1
Which make me wonder if your parameters are set to talk to the port in which you are plugged into. Check these parameters
    0020 1 try 0, 1 or 2
0021 Set the same as 20
    5001 1
    5002 --
    5110 6
    5111 2
    5112 10 (In case of 4800 baud)
    Hope this helps

I checked my parameters and they are:
    0020: 1
    0021: 1
    0022: 1
    0023: 1
    5001: 1
    5002: 0
    5003: 3
    5011: 1
    5013: 1
    5090: 0
    5110: 3
    5111: 2
    5112: 9

The RS232 port being used is on the CRT board. I've located the other CD1 port on the mother board but I do not have a spare cable or 20 pin Honda plug to build an extra cable. The CD1 cable now runs from the back of the machine, through the base, through the door and up in to monitor area. It will be a pain fishing the cable out to plug it into the mother board. I'm guessing that should be what I try next? Really appreciate everyone's help on this!

    Thanks,
    Ken

Also, these are the same parameters the machine have been set on since I've owned the machine for last 8 years

if it worked before and now it doesnt and you have not touched anything then that points to a board fault probably.
I would get hold of a RS232 tester that has LEDs on it (available on ebay for just a few bucks such as http://www.ebay.com/itm/271105233155), plug it in and do a punch and see if it responds. TX/RX should flash occasionally as data passes through and the others (CTS/RTS/DTR/DSR etc) should all go on. I forget exactly which should be high or low red/green etc, but they should all be lit up. if not your I/O or reader/puncher board is faulty.

The Female DB25 pin connector tends to suffer "wear" from repeated use.

You can make a cable that connects direcly from your PC to CD1. I suggest that you first try to replace the DB25 female connector on the machine serial port. This is an easy, cheap "lets try to see if it works"

If the problem persists even after replacing the 75188 and 75189, then the large LSI on the CRT PCB is damaged or has failed due to thermal stress.

trying to rem;ember, if it was our puma 6 or puma 10... one had a built in tape reader and someone flipped a toggle switch in the reader door that was causing it not to take data...been 20+ years ago, maybe i was dreaming... might not hurt to look- know a lot of those had readers built in.

a lot of these machines also had the 'connection unit adapter'- a gold anodized box mounted above the upside down I/O card(s) with a bunch of blue wire wrap jumpers... if you are in a real pinch for a honda plug:

theres a bunch of unused pins in there, look at the wire wrap side, you see the way they assembled them was insert pins from front and twist about 15 degrees to lock...a pair of needlenose, untwist the pin till it lines up with the slot, it will fall right out the other side...stack three of these pins togeter, break the center pin out, solder the 'hub' together, you now have a decent pin ejector...open the shell on your ca1 plug, push the prongs in from the front side of the pins, the wire/pin will slide right out...remove/mark whats there, you have a blue shell to use... as a test, pop some more male or female wrap pins, make up your cable, carefully push them in to do your testing...

you can buy pins/connectors from 'mhotronics', but suggest the solder tab types, as the crimpers are ex-pen-sive... I found a set years ago for 15 bucks, probably done a thousand plugs with them, they work great... but honda want like 7~800 bucks a pair (KP-308 I think is the part number). they also sell ejectors pretty cheep, just i needed one before i knew where to buy... have made dozens of the wire wrap pin ones for the maintenance guys, they work fine...a ring terminal makes a good 'handle' and holds the hubs well for soldering...

Re: RS232 Problems With Fanuc 10T..Have tried everything!! Need ADVICE!!

Sorry for the slow update but here's where I am at now.....

tc429..... No toggle switch on mine to flip. Thanks for the advise on the cable..built a new one.

fordav11... I tried an rs232 tester on it and the only light that lit up on it was the busy signal from the machine side...nothing when you would punch out or receive

hrh.... Built a new cable with a Honda 20 pin on one end and a DB25 on other end and connected directly to CD1 at CRT..still alarmed out SR820 - DR OFF alarm. 75188 and 75188 have both been replaced so I agree that the board is bad. Here is the pin out I used on the Honda and DB25 plug in case I did it wrong...found it on another thread on internet:

    Honda 25 PIN
    9 -------------- 2
    8 -------------- 3
    20 ------------ 4
    19 ------------- 5
    18 ------------- 6
    17 ------------- 7
    16 ------------- 8
    5 -------------- 20

I took the same cable above and plugged it into the CD1 port on the mother board. I changed to the following parameters since I understood the mother board location to be device 2
    0021- 2
    0021- 2
    0022- 2
    0023- 2
    5001- 1
    5002- 2
    5003- 3
    5011- 1
    5013- 1
    5090- 0
    5110- 3
    5111- 2
    5112- 9
    5120- 3
    5121- 2
    5122- 9
    5130- 3
    5131- 3
    5132- 2
    5113- 9

After doing this it now alarms out SR 870 (Parameter Setting Error). So once again I'm lost. Do I have a cable pin out wrong from my Honda to my 25 pin? Or a parameter entered wrong?? I really appreciate the PM's and everyone helping me on this board. Any further advice would be really appreciated!!!!

    Thanks,

    Ken Herring
