How come in your examples the tool paths curve outward after they clear the edge of the part instead of going straight out. You don't have a fillet to follow around the edge so why in the world would it do that?

I think it's just a series of lead-ins. It makes a little more sense to me when you see it cut or watch the simulation.
Turn off system comp. for the finish pass and it straightens the path for the finish pass.
The roughing passes you don't have that option.
I haven't looked at the file but it's probably "rolling" the cutter around the edges. Like a leadin/leadout. It keeps the cutter in contact with the material at all times.Quote:

No, but there are times where creating an offset of the part profile creates a better result,allowing the user to set how far off the part the tool starts. Looking at the "strip" of parts you are making, using a profile with side roughing may make more sense.
1) You will force the tool to start off the stock,
2) You can edit your lead in, so the tool rolls into the part ( better for the tool )

No you do not... By default the software will start off the part by the radius of the cutter +. At this time I am not sure of the default additional offset value, I know it's hard coded and I am not sure what we set it to. If you need more clearance you would need to offset the geometry yourself.

As you can see in this screen shot of your part, the yellow is the offset for half the cutter, the purple is the center line start point off the part.

In this example we have a 3 sided open shape, which can be problematic due to the "rolling" around the edge... Yes you may need to edit your wire fame to "adjust" the way the tool path is generated for a more appropriate result.
In your example you have the lead set to ramp in.

You notice there is no "ramp" in the tool path, The tool just plunges in... Why? Well an open pocket is designed to work from the outside in starting off the stock. The dotted line are representing the "edge" of the part or the "edge" of the stock where the tool can plunge to depth and work it's way in.
In your example you are cutting a strip of parts and the boundary you have setup would cause the tool to plunge in the material.

A different way to use the open pocket would be to create a 2 sided open.

You could even make it a single side open pocket forcing the tool to start off the part on the left and just clearing the material over the shoulder.
