Fanuc OM 086 error code
I know Iv'e seen an answer for this in a post somewhere but I can't find it again. My machine will send to the computer but I can't send to the machine without 086 code coming up. I have RS 232 in line checker that I got from radio shack rts and cts won't light up, I don't know what that means exactly
any help would be helpful

You should have 6-8-20 jumpered together on the Fanuc end.

086 DR signal error code
6 8 20 tied together on the cnc 25 pin side 7&8 tied on the pc side 2 & 3 straight through and 7 on the 25 pin side to the 5 pin on the 9 pin side. like I said I can send from the machine to the computer so my parameters, and modem settings must be right ? any other ideas would be helpful

086 is DR Signal Off, which jumpering pins 6-8-20 usually cures.
You don't say anything about pins 4-5 (RTS-CTS) on the Fanuc end. I believe pins 4-5 should be jumpered on the Fanuc end (if you're not using hardware handshaking), but this shouldn't cause 086 alarms.
I've had those Radio Shack RS232 testers fail, so you can't always rely on them. I would suggest that you check resistance between pins 6-8, 6-20 and 8-20 on the Fanuc end of the cable to verify those connections.
Have you tried this cable on another Fanuc? If it works on other machines, it's possible you could have a bad PCB in the Fanuc.

Pins 4 & 5 are tied at the Fanuc side. I will try taking the tester out of the equation, and also get the ohm meter out and recheck everything. If the PCB was bad, would it output to the computer like it does? would it help to try hardware handshake configuration?

Check your cable , we ran cable to three Johnfords, two cables were giving the same error ( high impedance, non twisted pair). The other cable was low impedance 4 pr twisted. Belden said the high impedance cable wasn't letting the weak DR signal reach the computer. we rewired with the right cable and no more problem. Hope that helps. The Cable we were told to use is Belden "Bel8723"

You have to have the edit key turned to enable.

You may have a bad pin 20 (DTR) output on the Fanuc control, so pins 6 and 8 are not being held high. Try using a wire through the cable to connect pin 4 on the PC side to pins 6 and 8 on the CNC side.
Also, are you sure that's not an 087 (buffer overflow) alarm you're getting instead of an 086 ?? That's the only alarm that should be possible to get only "one way", when the CNC is receiving data.
