Laid-off from work but made my G0704 CNC start to work
Hi, everyone I am proud to have my 1st post here.
My G0704 and its conversion kit has been sitting in my garage for about one year
I never have time to put everything together until I got laid-off from work last month.
I just mounted my 3 stepper motor on my G0704 and start to cut some 6061.
I am using:
X & Y axis : Wantai 57 stepper motor 425oz
Z axis Wantai 86 stepper motor for Z 1200oz
4A Wantai DQ542MA Controllers
36V 350W power supply
X & Y axis :1605 C7 ballscrew
Z axis: 2005 C7 ballscrew
Problems so far:
Cannot figure out how to control the spindle motor with mach3
7A DQ860MA for the 86 motor is not working maybe the 36V power supply is not powerful enough.
Z axis movement is not smooth, it vibrates a lot when head is going down.
Head also vibrates when plunge
Auto tool zero crash sometimes, Z going down again after probe is found, only happen when G code is loaded.
Still have a long way to go to make this machine to work perfectly.
any advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated:)

Welcome to the Zone!
The Z can most likely be improved by attention to detail in the adjustment of the ball screw alignment, thrust or AC bearing adjustment and gib adjustment. Proper way lubrication is essential too. Methodically go back thru all of the fasteners and procedures.

I have the z run very smooth with slide only before I put the heavy spindle on it. But I found out the z is getting tighten when it is approaching the top of the column. I did this test by moving the slide up and down without the ball screw attache on it. I'm thinking that the Z column dove tail is not parallel, not sure if this normal to the G0704

All machines will have variances in the parallelism, flatness, level and perpendicularity . Chinese machines are no different. The prices are different due to QC.
Since we saved so much in price over a locally produced machine, we have to spend the time or money in proper set up.
Your machine binds more at the top than in the middle of its travel? Have you adjusted the gibs properly with an indicator or by feel/snug?
What are using for way oil?
Did you make sure and clean all of the surfaces of the cosmolene/packing grease? Deburr or verify that deburring was done on all corners or sharp edges?
I dont want to suggest lapping or scraping yet when many problems are due to our misunderstanding of machine set up procedures.
Are your ball screw mounts mounted perpendicular to the direction of travel? How much does the ball screw vary along a Z way and the screw itself top to bottom?
Not to be rude, how much experience with a milling machine do you have? If none, then many times our expectations of how a machine should work are different than the reality. In fact I see comments all of the time about how hard it is to do a task in machining. I even make them. Truth is, it is a profession. To be good at it, you better study and practice. There is no one way either. Many different methods can be used to accomplish the same thing. The safe way is the preferred way in my book.
